History of Fridley, Minnesota
Fridley became a city in 1957. Minneapolis borders Fridley, Columbia Heights to the west, New Brighton to the north, Shoreview to the east, and Mounds View to the south. Interstate 694 and Minnesota State Highway 65 are two of the main routes in the community.
The first settlers arrived in 1844. Saint Anthony Township was initially part of Columbia Township. Fridley's first post office was established in 1858, with John C. Fremont as its first postmaster. The community was named for William S. Fridley, an early settler and landowner.
In 1887, the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway built a branch line through Fridley from Minneapolis to Duluth. Minnesota State Highway 65 (MN 65) was constructed along this line in 1922. This made Fridley a more desirable place to live, and the population grew rapidly.
Fridley was incorporated as a village in 1953 and became a city in 1957. The first mayor of Fridley was Clarence Wigington, who served from 1953 to 1962.
