History of Fergus Falls, Minnesota
Fergus Falls was named after James Fergus, a man who went to Montana during the gold rush and became quite successful. The city was staked out by Whitford, who named it after the man who financed the expedition. However, Whitford never got to see the city as he was killed during an Indian uprising in 1862. Little development happened during the next few years due to the Civil War and another Indian uprising. However, in 1865, Ernest Buse became the first permanent settler in Fergus Falls. He built a cabin along Fir Avenue, and he and his family remained alone for two years before others arrived. James Fergus died in 1902, thinking that the city was too remote to amount to much.
It was not until 1870, when Minneapolis real estate agent George Burdick Wright bought land along the river, that the town started to take shape. Wright saw the river's potential as a source of power and convinced Minneapolis banker R.J. Mendenhall to purchase land adjacent to his. The two were responsible for building the first wooden frame sawmill and the first dam and bridge across the Otter Tail River. Wright was a promoter of extraordinary skill. He induced people to settle in Fergus Falls by offering free business lots to anyone willing to build a building. As the owner of the town's only sawmill, he undoubtedly earned back his investment by selling new landowners their lumber. Thanks to Wright's vision and promotion, Fergus Falls developed into a bustling village and remains a thriving community today.
Growth was slow at first as rutted paths were turned into dirt roads, and storefronts of sawn lumber replaced log cabins. The town grew in the early years because of the river. Sawmills, flour mills, and woolen mills grew up along the river banks, and the rapids were harnessed for electrical power. The services offered by the mills made the town a central trading location, bringing farmers from miles around into town with their grain, wool, and lumber. In 1856, the first railroad line came through, and the city began to grow even more rapidly. New businesses and industries moved in, drawn by the promise of cheap transportation. By the turn of the century, the town was a bustling metropolis with over 100,000. The town is still a major center of commerce and industry, but it has also become a popular tourist destination thanks to its rich history and beautiful setting.
