History of Farmington, Minnesota
The city of Farmington was founded in 1858 by William D. Bainbridge and his family. They settled on the west side of the Mississippi River, near present-day downtown Farmington. The area was initially inhabited by the Dakota people and was known as "Mdewakanton," meaning "Dwellers by the Sacred Lake." The Bainbridges built a log cabin and farm on their land, quickly becoming a thriving community. In 1866, the town was officially incorporated as a village. The Village of Farmington continued to grow and became a city in 1974.
