Champlin, Minnesota, was founded in 1852 by Lewis Champlin, a pioneer farmer who came to the area with his family. The small town rapidly grew, and by 1856 it had a population of over 300. The first school in Champlin was built in 1857, and the following year the town was incorporated.

During the Civil War, Champlin served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, helping shelter escaped enslaved people on their journey to freedom.
