History of Bemidji, Minnesota

Bemidji, the First City on the Mississippi, has a unique and diverse history. Bemidji comes from the Ojibwe word bemijigamaag, meaning "lake with crossing waters." This refers to how the Mississippi flows across Lake Bemidji on its way east. Bemidji has been a favored place for settlement throughout recorded history, from the ancestors of the Dakota who lived on its shores to the Ojibwe who gave the lake (and therefore city) its present name, to the Euro-Americans, African Americans, and other ethnic groups who have come to call this picturesque city home.

The first residents of the Bemidji area in recorded history were Native Americans who settled in Northern Minnesota following the retreat of the glaciers around 10,000 years ago. The receding glaciers left a relatively smooth landscape with numerous lakes, bogs, and moraines. These land features resulted in a natural environment rich in wildlife and plant diversity. The Native Americans who settled in the area were primarily hunters and gatherers and relied on abundant resources to sustain themselves. In the centuries that followed, the Native American population in the Bemidji area declined as European settlers began to move into the region. However, their impact on the land was minimal compared to that of the settlers. The settlers cleared large tracts of land for agriculture and logging, dramatically altering the landscape. As a result, the once-rich natural environment of the Bemidji area has been substantially reduced. Although human activity has significantly changed the site, it retains some natural beauty.

The Dakota is a native American tribe who, by the late 1600s, had migrated to present-day Bemidji, MN. Though they are a plains tribe today, their original lands were further east and included parts of northern Minnesota. The westward migration of the Ojibwe in the 1700s pushed the Dakota west and south into the areas where many live today. The Dakota has a rich culture and history and plays a vital role in Minnesota. Today, several federally recognized Dakota tribes and many historical sites and monuments commemorate the Dakota people and their significant impact on the state.

Shaynowishkung, also known as "Norman," "Chief Bemidji," and "Bemijigamaag," was an Ojibwe elder and spokesperson who lived on the south shore of Lake Bemidji in the late 1800s. He was born near Inger, Minnesota, around 1834 and was a Pillager Indian of what was then known as the Cass Lake Band of Chippewa. Shaynowishkung played a significant role in treaty negotiations between the Ojibwe and the United States government in 1855 and 1867. He also served as a guide and interpreter for Henry Schoolcraft during his expedition to northern Minnesota in 1832-33. In 1866, Shaynowishkung helped to found the town of Bemidji, named after him. He died in 1906 at the age of 72.

The European American settlement of the Bemidji area began in the mid-1800s with the lumbering industry. The first sawmill was built in 1866, and by the early 1870s, the area had become an essential center for logging in Minnesota. In addition to the lumbering industry, farming became an essential part of the Bemidji economy in the late 1800s. The rich soils and expansive prairies of northern Minnesota were well-suited for agriculture, and many Euro-American settlers moved into the area to establish farms. The city of Bemidji was formally incorporated in 1896, and its population grew throughout the early 20th century.

In the early 1900s, the Bemidji area became a popular tourist destination due partly to Ernest Ankeny. Ankeny was a photographer and journalist who wrote articles extolling the area's beauty. He also established a resort on Lake Bemidji, which helped to increase tourism.
