The town was initially settled along the Cedar River, and it has two artificial lakes called East Side Lake and Mill Pond. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.43 square miles (29.57 km2), of which 11.27 square miles (29.18 km2) is land, and 0.16 square miles (0.41 km2) is water. The city's racial makeup was 84% White, 1% African American, 13% Latino or Hispanic origin, 1% Asian American, 0% Native American or other indigenous peoples, and 3% from two or more races. "What's impressive about Austin's diversity is not only the number of different racial and ethnic groups represented in the city but also the relatively even distribution among them," says Bill O'Chee, a demographer at Minnesota State University, Mankato. "This evenness is quite rare in U.S. cities."
As of the census of 2010, there were 10,339 households and 6,292 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,194.5 inhabitants per square mile (848.7/km2). There were 11,068 housing units at an average density of 985.4 per square mile (380.9/km2).
