History of Anoka, Minnesota

The City of Anoka is rich in history dating back thousands of years. The first people to settle in the area were the Dakota and Ojibwa Indians. The name Anoka was derived from two Indian words: the Dakota word "a-no-ka-tan-than" on both sides of the river and the Ojibwa word "on-o- kay," meaning working waters. The Indians were attracted to the area because of the abundant resources, including fish, game, and timber. As more and more settlers arrived, the area began to grow and develop. Today, Anoka is a thriving community with a proud heritage. Thanks to its rich history and small-town charm, Anoka is truly a unique place to call home.

The two rivers, Rum, and Mississippi played an integral part in Anoka's settlement. Father Lewis Hennepin first visited this area in 1680, and settlers came to stay in 1844. Before the 1800s, the Dakota claimed the area surrounding Anoka, but later the Ojibwa pushed the Dakota westward across the Mississippi. The territory of Anoka then became a neutral ground between the two tribes. Both rivers are famous for recreational activities such as fishing, swimming, and boating. They are also a source of drinking water for Anoka residents. TheRum River is also home to various plant and animal life, making it a popular destination for nature lovers. In short, these two rivers have played a significant role in shaping the history and identity of Anoka.

Joseph Belanger was the first European settler in the Anoka area, building a log cabin on the east side of the Rum River near its mouth. The cabin initially served as a trading post with the Indians but later became a temporary home for many early settlers. Belanger's cabin was an essential landmark in the area and helped attract other immigrants to the region. The cabin is gone now, but its legacy remains.
