Andover is a city in Anoka County, Minnesota, United States. It is one of the northwestern suburbs of Minneapolis and is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. It is bordered by the cities of Coon Rapids and Blaine.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has 34.57 square miles, of which 32.83 square miles are land and 1.74 square miles is water. The elevation is 886 feet.
Interstate 94 and Minnesota State Highway 65 are the main routes in Andover. Other routes include County Road 9 and County Road 22. Andover is located in the North Central Hardwood Forest Region and has many lakes and wetlands throughout the city. The Mississippi River flows through the northeastern part of Andover.
History of Andover, Minnesota
Andover began as two separate communities. The southern portion of Andover grew from the growth of transportation and manufacturing along the Rum River, which flows through the center of town. Farmers first settled in the northern section. In 1858, these two areas combined to form Andover Township.
Andover was founded in 1857; the city was named after the hometown of one of its founders, D.C. Greene. The first settlers of Andover were mainly from New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, giving the city a strong foundation. As of the 2010 census, 30,598 people, 10,611 households, and 8,200 families resided in the city. The population density was 2,265.8 inhabitants per square mile (875.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 84.0% White, 4.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 5.6% Asian, 1.7% from other races, and 3.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.9% of the population.
There were 10,611 households, of which 52.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.8% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 16.7% were non-families. 13.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 3.6% had someone who was 65 years or older living alone. The average household size was 2.86, and the average family size was 3.14.
The median age in the city was 34 years. 31% of residents were under 18; 5.3% were between 18 and 24; 38.4% were from 25 to 44; 17.1% were from 45 to 64, and 7.8% were 65 or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.9% male and 49.1% female.
