Stoughton, WI Real Estate & Homes For Sale

Stoughton, Wisconsin, is a city located in Dane County. The city is home to several businesses and industries, including a large paper mill. Stoughton is a beautiful city with many things to see and do. There are plenty of parks and recreation areas for residents and visitors. The city also offers a variety of shopping and dining options. Stoughton is the perfect place for you if you're looking for a place to call home or want to visit for a while!

History of Stoughton, Wisconsin

Stoughton is a beautiful city located in Dane County in south-central Wisconsin. It was surveyed in 1833 and described as thinly timbered in burr, white and yellow oak, a strip of timber dividing the prairie along the river. When Luke Stoughton of Janesville came to the area, he was struck by its possibilities and purchased land in 1847.

The Catfish River, renamed the Yahara River in 1855, played a crucial role in the early development of the city of Stoughton. The river had a drop suitable for running sawmills and gristmills and provided a river road leading straight from Madison to the Mississippi. This made it perfect for moving goods, and Stoughton quickly took advantage by platting his village, building a sawmill, and hiring a miller to build and run a grist mill. He also encouraged teachers, doctors, blacksmiths, and shop owners to settle there. The railroad eventually rerouted its track through town on land Stoughton donated for the right of way.

The Mandt Wagon Works factory was built in 1883 by T.G. Mandt and quickly became known for the high quality of its wagons. The factory employed 225 men, many of whom were skilled artisans who crafted each wagon by hand. The wagons were so well-made that they were in demand everywhere, from Iowa to Minnesota. In 1883, a fire destroyed most of the factory, but Mandt rebuilt and produced high-quality wagons until he died in 1902. The Mandt Wagon Works was an essential part of Stoughton's history, and its wagons are still remembered today for their beauty and craftsmanship.

In the late 19th century, Wisconsin's wheat crops failed, leading farmers to plant tobacco instead. This labor-intensive crop required the construction of large warehouses and sorting houses, which provided work for the new flood of immigrants from Norway. While the men worked in the factories and stores, the women worked in the warehouses. Their need for time off at mid-morning to see to household chores started the tradition of a mid-day coffee break, an invention still celebrated each year in Stoughton.

Stoughton is a small city with a rich history, located in southern Wisconsin. The town was founded in 1847 by Elisha Stephens and named after his hometown of Stoughton, Massachusetts. Over the years, Stoughton has been home to several notable businesses and inventions. Lake Kegonsa became a popular resort destination in the late 19th century, and the city's ski slide was a popular attraction in the early 20th century. The Clark water heater was invented and manufactured here, and the first successful cataract surgeries were performed in Stoughton.

Today, the city is best known for its Norwegian heritage and celebration of Syttende Mai, Norwegian independence day. Every year, on the third Saturday in May, the streets of downtown Stoughton are filled with parades, music, and food, as locals and visitors come together to celebrate Norwegian culture.
