Mequon, Wisconsin, was founded by white settlers from 1836 to 1840. These early pioneers constructed flour mills powered by the Milwaukee River and soon afterward began exporting products in large part because it is located on what would become one of America's most essential railroads at that time -the Western Extension (now known as "The Empire"). By 1881, there were already two stores representing many different trades, including farming equipment or clothing manufacture; within ten years, more than 20 sawmills lined up along this same stretch while still having enough space left over for three shoe shops! With such prosperity came growth-it didn't take long before another hotel opened up alongside other businesses like blacksmiths & maltsters, which all gave the village its very own character. Today, Mequon has a population of 23,000 people and is still growing. The city offers a small-town feel while still being close to big cities. It is a great place to live for many reasons!
