Deforest, WI Real Estate & Homes For Sale

DeForest is a city located in Dane County, Wisconsin. The town has just over 5,000 people and is situated about 20 minutes outside Madison, the state capital. DeForest was founded in 1856 by Hugh J. DeForest, who named the city after himself. Initially, the city's economy was based on agriculture but shifted to manufacturing and other industries. DeForest is home to several parks and recreation areas and the DeForest Area Public Library. The city also hosts various events, including the annual Harvest Fest celebration. Visitors to DeForest can enjoy multiple activities, such as hiking and biking on the many trails throughout the city or exploring the city's historic downtown area.

History of DeForest, Wisconsin

Windsor township offers a window into some of the earliest human habitations in Dane county. First surveyed in 1834 and organized in 1847, the area now known as Windsor was once the principal hunting ground of the Ho-Chunk Nation. The rolling prairie upon which Windsor sits was largely uninhabited by Euro-Americans until the early 1800s but was known to trappers, traders, and settlers as “Winnebago Prairie.” The area is covered with ancient campsites and burial mounds left by the Ho-Chunk people.

William Lawrence arrived in the township in 1841, making him the first white settler. He was a Yankee from New England and wasted no time establishing himself in the area. He purchased a large amount of land and built a travelers' inn known as Eagle Point Tavern. The tavern was south of the present Highway DM exit to Morrisonville off Highway 51. Lawrence's inn quickly became a popular stopping point for travelers, and it played a vital role in the development of eastern Dane County. Lawrence's legacy is evident today in the many historical landmarks that bear his name.

As the United States expanded westward in the early 19th century, settlers from all over the country began to move into the Wisconsin Territory. Among the first to arrive was a group of New Englanders known as "Yankees." They were soon followed by English and Scottish settlers, who established communities in present-day Dane County.

The city of DeForest was founded in 1856 by Hugh J. DeForest. He named the city after him, and it quickly became a center for agriculture in Dane County. In 1864, the Wisconsin Central Railroad chose DeForest as the site of its repair shops, which brought new jobs and economic growth to the area.

By the 1850s, many Norwegian and German immigrants had begun arriving in Dane County. These new settlers transformed the landscape of Dane County, paving the way for future generations of residents.
