History of Waconia, Minnesota
The first inhabitants of the Waconia area came from New Orleans, up the Mississippi River, over the Minnesota River to Carver’s Landing at Carver, Minnesota. From there, they followed Carver’s Creek to Burandt’s lake and found their way through a heavily wooded area to what is now Waconia. In 1852, the first permanent settlers arrived in Waconia. These settlers were primarily of German and Irish descent, and they quickly set about clearing the land for farming. The rich soils and ample rainfall made the area ideal for agriculture, and soon the settlers had established prosperous farms.
The city is named after Lake Waconia, derived from the Dakota word Wakan, meaning "sacred." The city's slogan is "More Than a City by a Lake." The settlement of the area where Waconia is now located began as soon as the Indian title to the land was extinguished and a government survey was done. Ludwig Sutheimer and Michael Scheidnagel are claimed to have been the first permanent settlers. In 1852, with an increase in population, Carver County was organized, and Waconia was designated as its county seat. A log cabin courthouse was built and remained in use until 1858 when the first brick courthouse was completed. The building of this second courthouse also resulted in Waconia being platted as a village.

In 1901, the first bank, Citizens State Bank of Waconia, opened its doors for business.
