History of Marshfield, Wisconsin

The first settlers of Marshfield arrived in 1856, led by Philip Bauer and his family. Bauer founded the city as a lumber town, and its economy soon became centered on the forestry industry. In its early years, Marshfield was known as "Bauer's Mill" and "Logtown."

The city grew rapidly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reaching a population of 3,000. The completion of the Wisconsin Central Railroad in 1873 made Marshfield a critical shipping point for lumber and other products. The sawmills process millions of lumber each year.

The city was also home to several large paper mills, which used the city's plentiful supply of timber to produce paper and cardboard. These industries continued to grow throughout the first half of the 20th century, making Marshfield one of the largest industrial centers in the state.

The city has recently diversified its economy and is home to various businesses and industries. However, the forestry industry remains vital to the city's history and economy.
