History of Hartland, Wisconsin

Stephen Warren may have been the first white settler in the Hartland area, but he certainly wasn't the last. In the years that followed, the area became a haven for those looking to start a new life on their terms. The combination of fertile farmland and access to the Bark River made it an ideal location for wheat farmers, and the community soon came to be known as Hersheyville.

The construction of the Watertown Plank Road in 1848 brought more settlers and businesses to the area, and a small commercial district quickly developed. The Milwaukee and Watertown Railroad reached Hartland in 1854, promoting even more commercial growth and offering a faster and more efficient means of transportation than the Watertown Plank Road.

Hartland was incorporated in 1892, and since then, it has been a hotspot for tourists looking to enjoy the beauty of the nearby lakes. Establishing a permanent fire department and constructing a gas plant allowed the city to provide gas fuel for cooking stoves and light city streets. The resorts remained popular through the 1940s. After World War II, Hartland became a bedroom community due to new transportation infrastructure developments.
