History of Burlington, Wisconsin

Burlington is a beautiful city located in southeastern Wisconsin at the confluence of the White and Fox Rivers. The city is steeped in history and was first settled in 1835 by Moses Smith and William Whiting. The availability of water power to run saw and grist mills was an essential factor in the city's early development.

In 1833, four men--Daniel Shays, Daniel Warner, armed surveyor Elihu Doty, and farmer James Transue--came to the Fox River area in search of new opportunities. Others soon joined them, and the small settlement they established quickly grew. One of the first orders of business was the construction of a dam and sawmill, which provided much-needed jobs and helped to attract even more settlers. In 1836, Daniel Rork claimed land on which much of the early settlement was built; he sold the claim later to Silas Peck. The following year, Moses Smith was appointed postmaster of the settlement, which was then known as Foxville. In July 1839, the name of the town was changed to Burlington.

In 1843, Pliny Perkins built a woolen mill, producing the first roll of cloth in Wisconsin. The first German inhabitants arrived in 1848, and Burlington had nearly 2,000 residents. Incorporated as a village in 1886 and moving to city status in 1900, Burlington has continued to grow. In 2014, an estimated 10,541 persons lived in the city, with another 6,000 living in the surrounding area.

The city's historic downtown area is home to many shops, restaurants, and art galleries, while its scenic riverside location makes it a popular spot for hiking, biking, and fishing.
