History of Baraboo, Wisconsin

Baraboo's first settlers came in 1838, attracted by the area's potential for development. The city is near the Wisconsin River, making it a perfect spot for businesses and homes. By 1846, Baraboo had become the county seat, and by 1866, it had become an official village. 

Baraboo is most often known as “Circus City” for several reasons. In 1884, the young Ringling Brothers gave their first official circus performance. They rapidly grew successful and eventually joined forces with the Barnum & Bailey show, giving rise to the famous circus name. Not only did the Ringlings call Baraboo home, but other circuses also started here: Gollmar Brothers, John Robinson, Forepaugh Sells Brothers, Fun on the Farm, and Wilbur W. Deppe’s Classic Country Circus.  

The Ringling Brothers Circus World Museum was opened in 1955 and features attractions such as the most extensive circus wagon collection in the world, a library with over 10,000 books on circus history, and interactive exhibits. The museum is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of the circus.

Baraboo is also home to the Al. Albert Ringling himself built Ringling Theatre in 1915. The theater is a beautiful example of vaudeville architecture and hosts a variety of performances throughout the year.
