Sauk County, WI Real Estate & Homes For Sale

Reedsburg is a city in Sauk County, Wisconsin, United States. Reedsburg, Wisconsin, is a small town in the middle of the state. It's a great place to raise a family, with plenty of activities and events for kids and a strong sense of community. If you're looking for a slower pace of life, Reedsburg is worth considering!

History of Reedsburg, Wisconsin

David C. Reed built the first dam and shanty at Babb's Ford in 1847, naming the area after his friend and business partner, Alvan Babb. The initial buildings were of poor construction due to the marshy land created by the Baraboo River. By 1850, "Shanty Row" comprised five tamarack shanties. In June 1848, a sawmill followed. Main Street would later be built where "Shanty Row" stood. These initial buildings started what would later become known as the City of Baraboo.

Reedsburg was originally part of the Town of Franklin, organized in 1848. In 1850, the town's name was changed to Freedom due to the anti-slavery sentiment of its residents. The City of Reedsburg was incorporated from parts of Freedom and Beaver Dam Townships on March 2, 1868. The city took its name from David C. Reed, one of the first settlers in the area.

The city grew rapidly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as it became a center for lumbering and agriculture. The Badger Army Ammunition Plant (BAAP) was established outside Reedsburg during World War II, significantly boosting the local economy. The plant closed in 1997 but has since been converted into a business park.
