History of South St. Paul, Minnesota

In 1826, Chief Big Thunder of the Dakota tribe led his village of Kaposia from their home on the east bank of the Mississippi River to the west bank. The decision was made in response to the annual spring floods that often afflicted the village. The move proved to be a wise decision, as Kaposia flourished on its new site. The village quickly became a thriving trade center, attracting visitors from all over the region.

Big Thunder welcomed missionaries and teachers to Kaposia. When Red Nation, Little Crow V, succeeded Big Thunder in 1845, steamboats routinely stopped at the village. In 1851 Red Nation signed the treaty transferring Indian lands west of the Mississippi to the United States for money and reservation lands. In 1853 Red Nation moved his village to a Minnesota River reservation. The name Kaposia and its mission buildings remained. Nine years later, Little Crow V led the Dakota people in the most significant Indian war in U.S. history.

When Dakota County opened to settlement in 1853, several mission workers quickly claimed the South St. Paul area. Kaposia was the first Dakota County seat and post office location, but the seat was moved to Mendota the next year and later to Hastings. In 1858, Dakota County organized its first townships, with the South St. Paul area falling under West St. Paul Township. That township extended from today's Delaware Ave. East to the Mississippi River and from 60th Street in today's Inver Grove Heights north to the Mississippi. However, in 1874 Ramsey County annexed the northern portion of the township, creating St. Paul's West Side.

In 1886, Charles Clark acquired township property along the Kaposia area along the river. Soon after, Alpheus Stickney laid plans for stockyards along the river. A significant change was in the making! The stockyards would bring jobs and economic growth to the area, and Clark saw the potential for Kaposia to become a thriving community. He began to invest in infrastructure and businesses, and by the early 1900s, Kaposia was a bustling town with a population of over 3,000. Thanks to Clark's vision and Stickney's foresight, Kaposia had become a thriving community poised for continued growth.

The City of South St. Paul was founded on March 2, 1887, when the entire West St. Paul township was incorporated as a city. The incorporation was proposed by leaders from South Park and the stockyards, who saw the need for services such as sewers, water, police and fire protection, and schools in the rapidly growing area. The township leaders, primarily farmers, agreed to join in forming the new city. The first city meeting was held three days later at the McClung School near Annapolis and Oakdale. South St. Paul is a thriving community with a rich history and bright future. Thanks to its founders, the city has always been a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
