Richfield is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota. An inner-ring suburb of Minneapolis, Richfield is the home of Best Buy’s HQ and the headquarters for the U.S. operations of Cars.com. History of Richfield
Richfield was founded in 1908 with land purchased by Patrick and Catherine McMahon from Louis W. Hill, the Great Northern Railway owner. The McMahons subdivided their purchase and announced "Richfield Village" would open for settlement on August 1, 1908; one ad proclaimed: "$300 buys you a lot, $1 down and $1 per week." The first settlers to Richfield were Irish immigrants, followed closely by Germans. As of 1915, all available land had been purchased, and Richfield Village was incorporated as a city on November 7, 1916.
Richfield multiplied in the post-World War II years, going from a population of 3,311 in 1940 to 28,101 in 1960. In 1966 Richfield was annexed by the city of Minneapolis under threat of incorporation as an independent city by Edina. The city continues to grow in population and has developed extensively since the 1960s. According to city officials, peak growth occurred between 1950 and 1980, when the people more than tripled. The population declined slightly during the 1980s before stabilizing in the early 1990s.
Richfield is home to many corporate citizens, including Best Buy, the national headquarters for its U.S. operations. Other Richfield-based companies include Radisson, Sun Country Airlines, and Splash CarWashes. The city is also home to the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest urban national wildlife refuges in the United States.
