History of Duluth, Minnesota

Duluth, Minnesota, is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and is the county seat of St. Louis County. Duluth is the 4th largest city in Minnesota. Duluth is also the 2nd largest city on Lake Superior. The city is located about 218 miles (350 km) north of Minneapolis and St. Paul and about 47 miles (76 km) east of Superior, Wisconsin. Duluth was founded in 1856 by George Stoneman Jr., John A. Johnston, and Daniel Tyler. The three men purchased 1,600 acres of land from Pierre Parrant and began to plot the new town. Duluth was initially named "New Duluth," whose first inhabitants were fur traders from Canada. In 1870, the settlement was renamed "Duluth" after its sister city of Duluth, Minnesota, on the other side of Lake Superior.

The city quickly grew into a major port on Lake Superior, thanks to its location at the western end of the Great Lakes and its natural harbor. Duluth became a regional center for iron ore production and shipping lumber, grain, and other goods. The opening of the Saint Lawrence Seaway in 1959 made Duluth an even more critical shipping center. Duluth is a thriving city with a vibrant arts and culture scene.
